Cumulative and Lap Running Time

In competitive timing, stopwatches use cumulative and lap measurements to track performance over segments and the entire race. Understanding the difference is key to pacing and performance analysis.

Cumulative Time (Overall Time)

  • What it is: The total time elapsed from the very start of the race until the current moment.
  • How it works: The clock continues to run in the background throughout the entire event. Even when you record a split at a specific point, the cumulative timer keeps counting without resetting.
  • Best for: Tracking the final finish time or seeing how far into a race you are (e.g. crossing the 10km mark at 45 minutes).

Lap Time (Interval Time)

  • What it is: The duration of a specific segment or lap of the race.
  • How it works: When you press the lap button, the stopwatch measures the time taken for that individual segment. It essentially resets its count for the next segment while the cumulative timer remains unaffected.
  • Best for: Analysing consistency and pacing strategies. For example, you can see if your second lap was slower than your first to identify fatigue.
